The scarf or carre (square) was introduced in 1937 featuring “Jeu des Omnibus et Dames Blanches.” The company’s scarf designers spend years creating new print patterns that are individually screen-printed. Designers can choose from over 70,000 different colors. When production started a dedicated factory was established in Lyon, France, the same year that Hermès celebrated its 100th anniversary. Today’s Hermès carrés measure 90 cm × 90 cm, weigh approx. 65 grams and are woven from the silk of 250 mulberry moth cocoons. All hems are hand-stitched. Motifs are wide-ranging. Since 1937, Hermès has produced over 2,000 unique designs.
